ST JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, VICTORIA is a community made up of former Anglicans, now part of the Catholic Church, together with lifelong Catholics, and those received into full communion many years ago who have now found their home with us. Our parish was formed in December 2011 by members of the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada seeking unity with the Catholic Church under the terms of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus. The first members were received at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Victoria on Sunday 15 April 2012 by Bishop Richard Gagnon. In Advent 2012 the Canadian communities of the Ordinariate came together to form the Deanery of St John the Baptist. Our parish is served by a Parochial Administrator, Fr Kenyon, assisted by two Parochial Vicars, Mgr Peter Wilkinson and Fr Don Malins, and the Ordinary Emeritus of the Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Mgr Carl Reid.

Fr Don says: ‘At All Saints, Vernon I was in need of church school teachers. A lady offered to teach if I would help out with a young team of eight and nine year olds in minor hockey. This led to 10 years of coaching and refereeing in three towns. It was so different from parish work! I was then asked to be the Training Officer for the Army Cadets in Salmon Arm. When we moved to North Saanich I became the Executive Officer of the Sea Cadet Corps. A year later I was asked to become the Chaplain for HMCS Malahat of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. The community work in hockey and the military were a great outlet from Parish Ministry. I soon learned that evangelism was to those outside the Church and conversion was to those who claimed Church membership’.
